Plastic Surgery at HEAL

We were able to work again this year with Dr Luc, a general surgeon, in developing his skills and expertise in Plastic Surgery.  Paul assisted him in cleft lip and cleft palate cases as well as congenital male genital deformities and release of burn hand contractures in young children.

Africans form large scar masses called KELOIDS. Many are grotesque and incapacitating. Team visits are a good occasion to remove such tumours as well as other large masses Africans are able to grow. One girl had a breast lump removed that weighed more than the baby delivered by caesarian section in the next theatre.

NOMA is a flesh eating infection removing large portions of the face, frequently in children. It is endemic in DR Congo and known as the FACE OF POVERTY. Plastic Surgery is often able to reconstruct these deformities or provide some improvement. We were able to operate on a number of such young people this year.
